Galvanizing of reinforcement steel

Reinforcement steel is normally passivated and thus protected due to concrete’s high level of alkalinity. This protection can be lost if the conditions are unfavourable. This leads to corrosion of the steel reinforcement followed by cracks and spalling. The building and the supporting elements will be protected for decades if the reinforcement steel is hot-dip galvanized.

Causes of concrete corrosion

  • Defects in the concrete due to cracks, grooves, gravel pockets or defective concrete covering
  • The natural process of concrete acidification due to CO2 or acidic substances in the air
  • Exposure to de-icing salt
  • Exposure to salt in coastal areas

The advantages of galvanized reinforcement steel

The building and the supporting elements will be protected for decades if the reinforcement steel is hot-dip galvanized. This is especially important for transport facilities, lightweight concrete applications, thin-wall constructions and exposed concrete.
