Corrosion Protection

Corrosion Protection

Corrosion protection helps to extend the useful life of constructions and facilities, to save on repair- and service cost and to avoid loss of production.

Technical necessities and economic efficiency determine which corrosion protection method needs to be chosen. Active measures intervene in the process of corrosion directly and avoid, respectively reduce corrosion.

Corrosion:

EN ISO 8044 defines corrosion: “Physiochemical interaction between a metal and its environment that results in changes in the properties of the metal, and which may lead to significant impairment of the function of the metal, the environment, or the technical system, of which these form a part.”

Visible substances are formed as a result of corrosion, consisting mainly of hydrated iron oxides: R U S T.

Rust destroys millions of tons of steel. The most important types of rust and corrosion are:

  • General corrosion is proceeding at almost the same rate over the whole surface;
  • Localized corrosion, where discrete sites of the metal surface are particularly exposed to corrosion;
  • Pitting corrosion, where pinholes erode the metal surface.
